Chapter 9

“No, he didn’t,” Brooke said as she attempted to put her key into the front door lock but had been unable to. She hadn’t been to the house in about two weeks and decided to make an impromptu trip over there to gather the rest of her things before they were thrown out or leave it up to Mark to donate all of her high priced items to the less fortunate.

As far as Brooke was concerned, the less fortunate wouldn’t even know what to do with a pair of Givenchy heels or Jeffrey Campbell signature shoes. In her eyes retrieving all of her belongings was a means to protect all of her investments. Besides, she wouldn’t be able to step foot in church if she saw one of the church folk wearing one of her expensive handbags.

Brooke had decided she would take a trip over to the house while she knew Mark was down at the church and slip in and out before he even knew she had been there.But now standing on the outside of the house she once shared with him, she discovered how much of a monkey wrench it would be in her plans.

“He changed the locks. I can’t believe him,” Brooke repeated out loud as she tried her set of keys for the last time. She knew using her keys would have the same outcome but she’d wanted to attempt to use them one more time to be sure. There was no way that Mark would stoop that low and change the locks without telling her. But when she tried to use her key again, she ended up having the same outcome.

“I cannot believe he changed the locks on me without my knowledge.” Brooke pulled out her cell phone and dialed Mark’s number only to be sent to voicemail. She called again only for the same thing to happen. She got back in her car and knew exactly what she needed to do. Drive down to the church and confront him face-to-face, and that’s exactly what she intended to do. She pulled up Elise’s number and called her.

“Girl, why did your friend change all the locks at the house? I’m on my way to the church to confront him right now,” Brooke announced.

“Oh Lord, I’m praying now. Brooke, don’t do anything that’s gonna get you locked up. I don’t have any bail money to get you out this time,” Elise joked. Leave it to her friend to segue way into a joke during a time when Brooke wanted to completely lose her cool. That’s why Elise was the first person she decided to call at a time like this. She definitely kept her balance when she wanted to flip out.

“Girl, ain’t nobody getting locked up today.”

“Well I was just putting it out there in case you were getting some ideas. Christians can be thugs too ya know.”

“Oh Elise, cut it out; you’re about to make me crash with all this laughing.”

“All I wanted you to do was laugh.
